Hope can’t wait for Aubrey and her daughters. “When people hear that I need a place to live, they are quick to say, ‘I hope you find something soon.’ But that doesn’t feel like hope to me. I need hope with some feet.”

Those words — hope with some feet — capture the heart of Bridge of Hope.

Neighboring Volunteers put hope into action, following the example of Jesus by walking alongside families who are unhoused, anxious and alone. Hope needs feet!

Here at Bridge of Hope, our theme for our new fiscal year, starting this month, is “Hope Can’t Wait.”

Hope can’t wait because children can’t pause their childhood. Homelessness disrupts childhood in ways that compound over time: missed school, frequent moves, emotional stress, family disintegration. Eliza, Aubrey’s school-age daughter, has missed 17 days so far this school year. Every night without stable housing is a night a child like Eliza spends worrying, instead of doing homework, reading a book or playing. The effects of instability can last a lifetime. This past year in Bridge of Hope, the average age of a child facing homelessness was 9 years old. Hope can’t wait because childhood can’t wait.

Hope can’t wait because the timing of when a child gets the help they need can change the entire trajectory of a child’s life.

Hope means putting our feet into action for moms like Aubrey.

Might your community or city need a Bridge of Hope, to help engage churches to walk with families out of homelessness? I would welcome hearing from you. Let’s talk!

Join us – because hope can’t wait. Let’s walk out our faith together.
