Black History Month often invites us to reflect on legacy, the stories that shaped our past and the voices that continue to shape our present. Yet for many Black families experiencing homelessness, one of the most persistent barriers is not only the lack of housing, but the long experience of not being truly heard.
Shianne is a Black single mother of two who has spent years navigating systems designed to help, systems that asked her to comply, to prove, to perform resilience, but rarely to speak. Intake forms captured her income and household size, but not her goals. Appointments focused on timelines, not trust. Over time, she learned that survival required silence.
When Shianne entered Bridge of Hope, the difference was subtle but powerful. Before offering solutions, her Neighborhood of Support listened. They asked what stability meant to her. They honored her lived experience as a mother and centered her voice in the process. Progress didn’t begin with a checklist; it began with relationship.
Listening is not passive, and it challenges the power imbalances that have too often defined helping systems. Within cultural humility, listening is an intentional practice that recognizes the wisdom of lived experience and resists the urge to assume, fix, or rush. It acknowledges the long history of Black voices being overlooked and chooses a different path forward, one grounded in respect, curiosity, and shared power.
As we honor Black History Month, we remember that legacy is not only what we celebrate, but how we show up today. When we listen deeply, we do more than support families; we restore dignity, build trust, and help create pathways toward lasting stability.
Listening, when practiced with humility, becomes a legacy of its own. This Black History Month, we are invited to ask not only what we celebrate, but how we listen.
