Imagine the strength and hope that a supportive community can bring. It can turn dreams into reality and help individuals overcome life’s toughest challenges, like finding affordable housing and taking small steps towards stability.
Having her own home was important to Anna because she loves to cook and share her culture with those around her. She often has her Neighboring Volunteers over and prepares food and tea from Comoros, a small island off the coast of East Africa, where she is originally from. She makes things like samosas, chapati and chai, and offers these to show hospitality, community, respect and to build connection.
The beautiful home she now enjoys and her ability to serve others were once just distant dreams.
Anna and her son Imaan had been living in a local shelter when the social worker at Imaan’s school told her about Bridge of Hope. She joined the program and was soon connected to a group of Neighboring Volunteers.
After a long search for housing, Anna and Imaan found an affordable apartment thanks to the advocacy of the Bridge of Hope staff. When asked to describe how it felt to finally have a place of their own, Anna said, “I don’t even have the words. I felt so grateful and excited.”
Getting stable housing was a big step for Anna. It made her feel more confident about supporting her family, and she noticed that Imaan seemed happier now that they have a secure and safe place to live.
“I learned to have self-confidence and be stronger,” Anna said.
The Neighboring Volunteers created a sense of community by assisting Anna with her move and offering support in various ways. At the same time, Imaan became close friends with one of the volunteer’s sons. The boys enjoy playing sports at the park and video games together.
Anna says it was helpful that her Neighboring Volunteers live nearby and would come over to spend time with her. “We have created friendships, and that’s a good thing,” she said.
Anna works as an activities director at a nursing home and recently started classes to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). It was another big step for her to begin classes – Bridge of Hope gave her the confidence and opportunity to take that next step.
Even though Anna’s time with Bridge of Hope has ended, her journey is far from over. She now has a supportive community and valuable resources that will stay with her.
