Becoming the gift others need

In two short weeks it will be Christmas Eve.  And oh, how I love this season!  I love the lights that emerge as darkness begins to settle on our street each evening.  I savor finding quiet moments of being still, illuminated by the warm glow of our Christmas tree.  I treasure moments to enjoy the words of Christmas writings, like these from poet Ted Loder:

How silently,
How silently
The wondrous gift is given.

I would be silent now,
Lord,
And expectant….
That I may receive
The gift I need,
So I may become
The gifts others need.

As I watch Neighboring Volunteers working hard to find housing before Christmas for a mom and her son living in a car, I see people being the gift that others need.  When I see a couple donate a van for a mom and her four children, I see people being the gift that others need.  And when a business supporter offers to arrange a Christmas surprise for a family and donors provide financial support to bring hope and housing for families in Bridge of Hope, I see people truly being the gift that others need.

Just as that small baby born in Bethlehem was himself a gift to a world in need, may each of us, in this season, find time to be the gift that someone else needs.
