A Motel Room is Not a Home
Dalia, her 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were financially forced to move out of their apartment when her fiancé passed away and she couldn’t afford the rent on her own.
She and her children moved into a run-down motel about 20 minutes from where she works.
The motel room is small and there isn’t much storage space, so she put the things she loved in a dumpster. Sentimentality was too costly for her.
There is no kitchen in the room, just a mini fridge and a microwave, so Dalia buys expensive pre-made meals or fast food most of the time. Frugality was too costly for her.
Every time she needs to do the laundry, she goes to the laundromat down the street. It isn’t safe to leave her kids alone in the motel room, so she brings them with her. But they complain about having to go to the laundromat. Living in a room where she could safely leave her kids was too costly for her.
A motel room is not a home. She hopes that they will soon be able to move to a place with a kitchen where she can cook good meals. A place large enough to keep a few sentimental items. A place where her kids can safely play. A place where she can be frugal, sentimental, and feel safe.
To reach stability, security and safety, they’ll need rental assistance, the professional support of a case manager, and the relational support of Neighboring Volunteers.
