Social connections build bridges to happiness

September 21, 2018

What do we need to be happy?  Social science researchers have been asking this question for years and one of the strongest keys to happiness is having intimate bonds and social connections.  Having people in our lives with whom we can confide, have a sense of belonging and by whom we feel supported.

By the time a family finds Bridge of Hope, they are typically in a shelter, having drained a lot of their existing support of family and friends and often feel desperately lonely.  And it takes of lot of confidence and energy to try and build new relationships. Here’s a quick snapshot of what loneliness looks like

At Bridge of Hope, we believe that no family facing homelessness should be alone.  When faced with homelessness, most women do not have the confidence or energy to know where to turn for support.  Christian faith communities have a beautiful opportunity to surround a family in their time of great need, forming a Bridge of Hope Neighborhood of Support.  It is beautiful to see the strength from these relationships that emerge.  Please take a moment and enjoy Denise’s story of becoming a Neighboring Volunteer.

If you or someone you know is lonely, here are a few things I hope you’ll consider:  Text or call someone, instead of waiting for them to contact you.  Head outside. Take a walk.  Say hi to a neighbor.  Engage in light conversations with cashiers and others you are in contact with throughout your day.  Build bridges with other people in small ways, remembering that it takes time to build relationships.  And please remember that if your loneliness is negatively impacting your mental or physical health, there are places to turn for help.

May you find social connections that bring you happiness,
