Karen Brandes knew there were those in her local community in real need. She longed to help meet those needs, so she joined the founding board of Bridge of Hope Centre County (Penna.).
When this new affiliate hired a case manager to serve its first family, Karen transitioned from board service to become a mentor with other members of University Mennonite Church. Her group has provided *Anna and her grandson, *Kevin, with occasional transportation and child care, but – more importantly - genuine supportive friendships have also developed.
“Fun times with our family have included….playing kickball at Kevin’s birthday party…and a Christmas party with a hilarious white elephant gift exchange!” says Karen. “We have broken through the initial uncertainties to a place of mutual trust and caring… Through phone calls, social activities, and working through challenges together, we have all become friends.
“Being part of this program model, multiplied many times over, is a tangible sign of hope in an often hopeless world.”
