In late winter of 2006, I began praying for a new ministry. The prayer group ministry I've lead since 1994 was still going strong, but was not demanding much of my time or efforts. I was hoping to be able to do more for our Lord. (Be mindful of what you pray for, because He does answer our prayers!)
In July of 2007, my dear sister in Christ invited me to her church to hear her sister from Pennsylvania tell of her experiences with a ministry for homeless mothers over the previous ten years. My husband and I went and were very interested in this important ministry: Bridge of Hope National.
My friend and I had always loved working on projects and services together, and thought this would be a great opportunity to do something more together. Of the twenty or so people who were present at this meeting, a handful of us gathered regularly in the weeks and months to come. We made contacts by phone and word of mouth and received a wonderful positive response by people in our community. We organized and held an introductory meeting that was led and facilitated by Edith Yoder, Executive Director and Joy Sawatzky, Affiliate Start-Up Consultant with Bridge of Hope National. With the Lord's help we had record-breaking attendance!
From this point on our team grew, gradually but steadily, to become a Start-up Committee and then an Affiliate named Bridge of Hope St. Joseph County with an actively working board. Our board is steeped in prayer and strives to be totally reliant on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We believe this is true because at the times when we want to rush things along, He puts the brakes on. And when there appears to be a mountain in our path, He smoothes the way and causes wonderful and unexpected things to happen! God is good, and I am so thankful to be a part of Bridge of Hope! The members of our affiliate are so excited to see what He will do through us for the homeless women and children in our community. We trust that, because it is of the Lord, it will be lasting. "...being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6
