Celebrating the life and legacy of Sonia

Lt. Sonia Louise Pak, 38, passed away on April 16, 2014 at her home in Crofton, MD. After her valiant fight with breast cancer in 2011, Sonia’s battle resumed this past February with breast cancer that spread to her liver and bones. Despite her struggle with cancer, her unwavering faith in God, her love for her family, and the prayers of family and friends carried her admirably during her last days.

Sonia was born in San Antonio, TX to Daniel and Louise Gonzalez on October 31, 1975. She was known for her contagious smile and unshakeable positive attitude. Throughout her life, Sonia was a loyal person who was giving, encouraging, and nurturing every chance she had.

Sonia’s desire for service was seen by her family early in life. She went to high school at Tom C. Clark High School and graduated in 1994. She served as a combat medic in the Army and Air Force Reserves until 2002. At Bowie State University, not only did she earn her bachelor and master degrees in Nursing, but also graduated in the top 10% of the nursing class, received numerous awards for leadership and distinction, became a charter member and vice-president of Lamda Phi Beta Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, and passed her board examinations to become Nurse Practitioner. She loved serving as Clinical Nurse Specialist Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service for the last five years. Recently, she was presented the Surgeon General Award by the U.S. Surgeon General himself in a moving ceremony. She also taught Sunday school for ages 2 and 3 at Faith Community Church. She was truly gifted at baking, helping everyone, and most of all caring for her family – especially her two children.

Sonia is survived by her husband, Jhon Pak; children, Aidan Pak, Ella Pak; grandmother, Estolia Gonzalez; parents, Daniel Gonzalez, Louise Gonzalez; siblings, Tonya Gonzalez, Michelle Romero, Bobby Hinton; nieces, Mya Pak, Marina Romero and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
